Priorities for Tomorrow’s Tobacco Control Agenda and Sustainable Development

Dr Vera Luiza da Costa e Silva – Head of Secretariat of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) will speak alongside previously announced panellists: WHO Director General Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus and South Africa’s Minister of Health Dr Aaron Motsoaledi at the opening plenary. The session will explore ‘Priorities for Tomorrow’s Tobacco Control Agenda and Sustainable Development’.

Women, Development, and Tobacco Control

International Women’s Day on 8 March is marked by the second plenary which will discuss ‘Women, Development, and Tobacco Control’. Dr Flavia Senkubuge, WCTOH 2018 President, will chair the session that includes panellists Dr Lorraine Greaves, Senior Investigator at the British Columbia Centre of Excellence for Women’s Health and Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa.

The third plenary ‘Protecting Health Policies from Tobacco’ will be addressed by Dr Stella Bialous, Associate Professor at the University of California, Dr Anna Gilmore, Director of Tobacco Control Research Group at the University of Bath, and Dr Sheila Ndyanabangi, Principal Medical Officer at Uganda’s Ministry of Health.

‘Taxing Tobacco and Financing Tobacco Control’ is the subject of the final plenary session – discussed by panellists Jeremias N. Paul, Coordinator of Tobacco Control Economics at WHO, Patricio V. Marquez, Lead Public Health Specialist at the World Bank and Dr Frank J. Chaloupka, Economy Professor at the University of Illinois.
